In brief
- The “Mulberry House,” dedicated to the tradition of making mulberry raki, opens in Drenova, near Korça.
- The old school was restored and turned into a museum, processing lab and sales point, while the square was rebuilt.
- The project by the Albanian Development Fund and Korça Municipality follows the model of the “Cherry House” in Qatrom.
The village of Drenova near Korça has a new space dedicated to one of the area’s best-known traditions: making mulberry raki. The “Mulberry House” opened in the village’s old school building, which was restored and turned into a raki museum, a lab for producing and processing fruit, and a space for selling and promoting local products, ATSH reported.
The initiative was announced by Korça Mayor Sotiraq Filo. The project was carried out by the Albanian Development Fund in cooperation with the municipality and is part of the “Routes of Taste” program, which aims to create sites for producing and promoting typical products of Korça’s villages.
A new square for fairs and workshops
Besides the building, the village’s entire square was rebuilt and now has space for workshops, fairs, markets and community activities. According to Filo, through these spaces the traditions and signature products of Korça’s villages become part of a new tourism offering, creating opportunities for local producers and giving visitors the chance to sample the area’s flavors and hospitality.
The “Mulberry House” is the second space of its kind around Korça, after the “Cherry House” in the village of Qatrom, built on the same concept.
Drenova, Asdreni’s village
Drenova, at the foot of Mount Morava, is also known as the birthplace of the poet Aleksandër Stavre Drenova (Asdreni), author of the lyrics of the national anthem. Mulberry raki, made for centuries by local families, is one of the products Korça is seeking to link ever more closely with cultural and culinary tourism.
