Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany was taken to hospital by ambulance on Friday after collapsing at the club's Säbener Strasse training center while watching the reserve team's session. The news was first reported by the newspaper “Bild” and broadcaster “Sky,” which said a rescue helicopter also landed at the complex.
“Vincent Kompany had to seek medical treatment on Friday after collapsing during training for FC Bayern's amateurs,” the club said. According to Bayern, the 40-year-old Belgian is undergoing detailed examinations and will remain under doctors' care.
Eberl: We give him all the time he needs
“Vincent Kompany's health is our top priority. Vinnie is receiving all the necessary medical care and support, as well as all the time he needs,” sporting director Max Eberl said. He added that the coach's staff, in whom the club has “full confidence,” will take over his duties.
The episode follows several difficult days for Kompany. Last week it was reported that he was suffering from a viral infection affecting his legs, which raised doubts about his presence for Wednesday's Champions League match against Arsenal. Eberl had earlier said the coach, who reportedly needed help climbing stairs, was dealing with the infection and a hip injury.
Kompany returned to the bench for the Arsenal match, which ended 2-2, and had resumed training only a few days earlier. The former Belgium captain has coached Bayern since May 2024.
