In brief
- “Student Resistance” accepted raising the subsidized meal allowance from 3,500 to 4,500 denars a month.
- Conditions: the solutions must be written into law and the list of companies and supermarkets published before it takes effect.
- The new system, “M Student Meal,” will run through the “M.Services” app.
The “Student Resistance” organization in North Macedonia has accepted the new model for the subsidized student meal proposed by the government and the Ministry of Education, under which the monthly amount rises from 3,500 to 4,500 denars, Portalb.mk reported on Sunday.
Two conditions
The acceptance comes with two conditions: the agreed solutions must be included in the Law on Subsidized Student Meals, and the list of companies and supermarkets where the money can be used must be published in advance, before the law takes effect. According to the statement, the decision was made after broad consultations with students within the organization’s structures.
The model provides for a new system called “M Student Meal,” as a digital service in the “M.Services” app, as well as additional discounts for students when buying food. The discounts will remain valid until the end of the month, even if the student has spent the full 4,500 denars.
After the meeting with Mickoski
The proposal was presented on Wednesday at a meeting between Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski and the education minister and representatives of student parliaments from all universities. On Friday, Mickoski said he was awaiting the students’ response and that, in his view, they had also agreed at the meeting that the new model is better than the current one.
With the conditional acceptance, the ball is now in the court of the government and Parliament, which must decide whether to include the students’ demands in the legal changes. Portalb did not report any deadline for adopting the law.
