The “Marubi” National Museum of Photography in Shkodra opened on Friday, Oct. 16, the exhibition “Venetiku: Tracing a Photographic Collection,” dedicated to the history of the Venetiku photography studio in Korça. The project's curator is researcher Mikaela Minga.
The exhibition follows the journey of a photographic collection and the people who created and inherited it, linking the family's history to the city of Korça and to the social and political changes of the time. Particular attention is paid to Krisanthi Venetiku, who is described as the studio's last representative.
Photography as memory
In addition to the images, visitors will find archival documents and research materials that bear witness to the political persecution of members of the Venetiku family under the communist regime. The project raises questions about the relationship between photography, memory and history.
The exhibition was produced in cooperation with the Institute of Anthropology at the Academy of Sciences of Albania and the Authority for Information on the Documents of the former State Security (Sigurimi), with financial support from the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sports.
It is part of the international Archivi Aperti 2026 program, which aims to open photographic archives to the public. For the Marubi Museum, which holds one of the most important photographic collections in the Balkans, this is another foray into the history of Albanian photography beyond Shkodra.
