The “Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg” Historical Museum in Kruja marks 44 years today since its inauguration on Nov. 1, 1982. For the anniversary, the museum shared a chronicle of the opening period with the public, ATSH reports. The museum stands inside Kruja's famous castle, the seat of Arbanon and, according to KultPlus, a symbol of the three defeats of the Ottoman armies in the 15th century.
A memorial inside the castle
The museum was conceived as a memorial in which, according to its description, “architecture is synchronized with history and the medieval arts.” In creating it, the architects worked side by side with a group of historians led by Kristo Frashëri and a group of painters led by Bashkim Ahmeti. The frescoes on the interior walls are inspired by Byzantine art and portray, in a romantic spirit, scenes from Skanderbeg's return to Kruja to the glorification of the unity of the principalities.
Pavilions and exhibits
The exhibition is divided into several pavilions that take visitors from antiquity and the early Middle Ages to the Albanian principalities, the Ottoman conquest and the resistance against it. There are pavilions devoted to medieval castles and Albanian resistance, as well as Skanderbeg's chancery, a library, a hall of princes, a picture gallery and a heritage and echo pavilion.
The museum displays original objects, documents and bibliography, as well as authentic reproductions. Among them are ceramics, objects of bronze, iron and copper, original icons and period swords, as well as a bell dated 1462. The museum offers guides in Albanian and English for domestic and foreign visitors.
