Eleven students from different communities in Kosovo are spending this week in Janjeva, where they are taking part in a five-day camp to document the town’s cultural heritage. The camp began on Oct. 19 and ends on Oct. 23.
The activity is organized by the OSCE Mission in Kosovo, in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Regional Center for Cultural Heritage in Pristina, KultPlus reported.
From theory to the field
The camp’s goal is for students to become familiar with Janjeva’s history and cultural values and to learn practical heritage documentation methods in line with international standards. During fieldwork they apply these methods and contribute directly to documenting the area’s cultural assets.
Organizers also stress the social dimension: the camp aims to strengthen cooperation among young people from different communities and to foster understanding of cultural diversity in Kosovo. Documenting heritage, they say, is also an educational process that helps younger generations get to know this wealth and carry it forward.
The camp’s format, in which students work together in the field rather than only attending lectures, aims to pair technical knowledge with hands-on experience. Their work is expected to enrich the data on Janjeva’s cultural assets, which could later serve protection and restoration plans.
A town with many layers of history
Janjeva, in the municipality of Lipjan, is one of Kosovo’s oldest settlements, known for its neighborhoods of traditional architecture, its narrow alleys and the Catholic church that dominates the center. For years, experts and residents have warned of the risk of the old houses falling into decay, so initiatives to inventory and document them are seen as a first step toward protecting them.
