In brief
- Trump announced on Truth Social that he will spend more than $400 million on Republican candidates.
- Republicans hold narrow majorities in both chambers of Congress.
- A watchdog group accuses the president of violating campaign finance rules through the MAGA Inc super PAC.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that he plans to spend more than $400 million to help Republican candidates in the Nov. 3 midterm elections. In a post on Truth Social, he wrote that more than $300 million has already been spent on advertising and direct and indirect contact with voters, but gave no details on how much money will go to individual races.
Trump called these elections “the most important midterms in the country's history.” He is in the final weeks of a 32-day campaign push, with upcoming stops in South Carolina and Iowa.
Slipping popularity
Republicans hold narrow majorities in the House of Representatives and the Senate. Democrats hope to capitalize on Trump's falling popularity to win one or both chambers, which would allow them to block his agenda in the last two years of his term. A Reuters/Ipsos poll this week puts approval of the president's job performance at 31 percent, a record low. Republicans also face criticism over the economy and the prolonged war against Iran.
Legal questions
The MAGA Inc super PAC can raise unlimited sums but must operate independently of candidates' campaigns. According to its latest federal filing, it had $415.8 million in cash at the start of September. The watchdog group Campaign Legal Center has accused Trump of breaking these rules, citing his Sept. 4 statement that “this is my money that I control.”
In addition, according to reports, Elon Musk has spent $366 million on Republican campaigns since last year through America PAC and other conservative groups.
