In brief
- A woman was killed and three people were injured in Kyiv in an overnight Russian air attack.
- A metro station on the left bank, an apartment building, a medical facility and other buildings were damaged.
- Zelensky said Ukraine received no advance warning of the waves of ballistic missiles.
A Russian air attack on Kyiv overnight from Sunday into Monday left one woman dead and three other people injured, the mayor of the Ukrainian capital, Vitali Klitschko, announced on Telegram.
According to him, the attack hit a metro station on the city's left bank, a 25-story residential building, a medical facility and several non-residential buildings. A Reuters witness reported hearing explosions in the city.
Complaints over lack of warning
Ukraine's Air Force said it received no warning before a barrage of missiles struck Kyiv's power plants at around 11 p.m. on Sunday, while for a second wave at around 3 a.m. a warning did come. President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia launched ballistic missiles in several waves without any alert from Ukraine's partners.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he did not know exactly what had happened that night, citing a software problem with the early warning system a few nights earlier and adding that U.S. European Command is investigating the matter.
The attack comes at a time of tension between Kyiv and Washington, after President Donald Trump on Friday lifted a broad package of sanctions on Russia and has criticized Ukraine for its strikes on Russian energy infrastructure. According to the Wall Street Journal, Vladimir Putin has proposed a meeting with Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in November to discuss the war, while a U.S. official said Trump has not yet accepted the idea.
