Albania on Friday finalized its official participation in the International Stabilization Force (ISF) in Gaza. The agreement with the Board of Peace was signed at the headquarters of the Armed Forces General Staff in Tirana by the chief of the General Staff, Lt. Gen. Arben Kingji, and the ISF commander, Maj. Gen. Jasper Jeffers.
Defense Minister Ermal Nufi and U.S. Ambassador to Tirana Eric Wendt attended the ceremony.
Nufi: a commitment to lasting stability
Minister Nufi said Albania, as a founding member of the Board of Peace, reaffirms its commitment to international efforts to establish peace, guarantee security and create the conditions for lasting stability in Gaza.
The public statements did not give the number of Albanian troops who will take part in the mission, the cost or the deployment date. Earlier this year Gen. Kingji had said the first Albanian contingent would be part of the stabilization force's headquarters, while the Defense Ministry had sent a team to assess the situation on the ground.
Among the first countries
Albania had been named early in the year among the first states to pledge contributions to the force led by U.S. Gen. Jeffers, along with Kosovo, Indonesia, Morocco and Kazakhstan. The force is part of the plan to stabilize the Gaza Strip. Also on Friday, Minister Nufi received Turkey's new military attaché in Tirana, and the two discussed expanding cooperation in the defense industry.
