In brief
- Minister Saranda Bogujevci visited the building of the National Theater of Kosovo, where restoration work is continuing.
- The project is worth more than 7 million euros; professors from the University of Pristina are responsible for its design and supervision.
- The aim is to create good conditions for artists, staff and audiences without altering the building's historic character.
The restoration of the National Theater of Kosovo in Pristina is moving ahead at a fast pace. That was the message from Kosovo's culture minister, Saranda Bogujevci, after a visit to the building site, where work is underway to reconstruct the country's leading theater institution.
In a social media post, Bogujevci wrote that the process is moving “at a high pace.” According to her, the work involves the team managing the contract as well as professors from the University of Pristina, who drew up the project and are supervising its implementation on site.
More than 7 million euros for the building
The value of the investment, according to the minister, exceeds 7 million euros. She gave no details on how that sum is divided among the different phases of the work.
Bogujevci stressed that particular attention is being paid to professionalism and to meeting conservation requirements. The goal, she said, is for the building to preserve its historic value while being adapted to the needs of a modern theater.
Conditions for artists and audiences
According to the ministry, the project aims to give artists, technical and administrative staff and spectators suitable conditions for working and for watching performances. The ministry has not announced a precise deadline for completing the work, nor the date when the company will return to the building.
The National Theater of Kosovo, one of the oldest cultural institutions in the country, continues to produce shows during this period, including in cooperation with other stages in the capital, such as the Dodona Theater.
The minister's visit comes in a busy week for cultural life in Pristina. An immersive Van Gogh exhibition opened in the capital at Deep Space, the international exhibition NET/RRJET opens Wednesday at the Grand Hotel, and on Oct. 23 and 24 the first edition of the “LA RREMË” theater festival is expected, with performances and master classes at the Palace of Youth and other venues around the city.
