Prime Minister Edi Rama on Sunday issued a new invitation to dialogue to the students and lecturers who have been protesting for three weeks. On social media he posted images of a stone table placed in front of the Prime Minister’s Office, engraved with the word “Dialog” (Dialogue).
According to ATSH, Rama has said he is ready to consider any proposal from students and lecturers, while the government is preparing a package of measures to address their needs. The aim, the agency said, is to turn the proposals into decisions and concrete support.
Protesters: resignation, not dialogue
So far the protesters have rejected the invitation. They are demanding the prime minister’s resignation and have announced that the protest will continue. A day earlier, on Saturday, rallies were again held outside the Education Ministry and the Prime Minister’s Office, with acts of violence and clashes between police and protesters; lawmakers and members of the Democratic Party also joined the protest.
On Sunday, the 20th day of the protest, demonstrators first gathered near the Education Ministry and then marched to the Prime Minister’s Office, where they continued the rally. According to Top Channel, the protest was calm through the afternoon, apart from a firework launched into the air by participants. The report gave no figures for the number of protesters.
The new invitation came on the same day Rama presented the “Pasqyrë Albania” platform, which he said is meant to improve citizens’ communication with institutions and response times on complaints.
