In brief
- Social media posts claimed the toll on the National Road would rise to 8 euros.
- Minister Enea Karakaçi called the report “false” and said the toll is not going up.
- He said the ministry has no plan to change the current toll.
Infrastructure and Energy Minister Enea Karakaçi issued a public response Saturday to information spreading on social media about an increase in the toll on the National Road (Rruga e Kombit). According to the posts, the fee for using the Durrës–Kukës highway would rise to 8 euros.
Karakaçi labeled the information “FALSE” and denied it outright. “There is no increase in the toll on the National Road, and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy has NO plan to change or raise the current toll,” the minister wrote.
Why the toll matters
The National Road is the main artery linking the Albanian coast with Kukës and the border with Kosovo. It is used every day by freight carriers, by businesses that trade with the Kosovo market and by thousands of travelers, especially during holiday periods, when emigrants and tourists from Kosovo and the region head to Albanian beaches.
For that reason, any report of a change in the fee on this stretch of road quickly draws reactions, both from the public and from businesses that count the toll among their transport costs.
No new decision
The ministry did not say where the information circulating online originated. Karakaçi’s response was aimed at closing the debate the same day, making clear that no decision affecting the toll has been taken or is planned for now. For highway users, that means the fee stays the same as the one charged today.
