In brief
- Three guards were killed and eight students injured, some of them critically, according to the Palestinian Education Ministry.
- The Israeli military said it diverted the strike after noticing civilians and that the incident is under review.
- Gaza's Civil Defense also reported five more people killed during the day despite the ceasefire.
The Islamic University of Gaza, in the northern part of the enclave, was hit by a drone on Sunday, according to Palestinian sources cited by AFP. Three university guards were killed and eight students were injured. The Education Ministry in the enclave said some of the injured students are in critical condition.
The Israeli military said on X that it had carried out a strike against “a terrorist from Hamas's military wing” in the Gaza City area and had “diverted” the strike after noticing the presence of civilians. It said the incident is under review but did not clarify whether the victims at the university were hit by mistake. Nor did it give details about the identity of the militant it was targeting.
Other casualties during the day
The Hamas-run Civil Defense reported five more people killed in different parts of Gaza: three in Khan Younis, one in Deir al-Balah and one in northwestern Gaza City. That brings the day's toll in the enclave to at least eight dead, according to Palestinian authorities.
The Education Ministry said 10 students and teachers had been killed in the past 10 days, while 95% of university buildings have been damaged during the war.
A fragile ceasefire
The ceasefire took effect on Oct. 10, 2025, after two years of war, but Israel and Hamas accuse each other of violations. According to the Hamas-run Health Ministry in Gaza, more than 1,500 Palestinians have been killed this year. The U.N. considers the ministry's figures credible.
