An International Painting Colony dedicated to painter Vangjush Mio has opened in Korça, part of the 16th edition of the “Days of Mio” International Art Symposium. The annual event brings together local and foreign painters, ATSH (the Albanian Telegraphic Agency) reports.
Two venues, four days of work
The colony began at the Vangjush Mio House-Museum and will continue until Oct. 31, with activities also at Korça's Guri Madhi Art Gallery. The organizers are the Municipality of Korça, the Korça Center for Art and Culture and the Guri Madhi gallery. The published announcement does not yet give the names or number of participating artists.
Painting colonies give artists the chance to work side by side for several days, often drawing inspiration from the city and surrounding landscapes, while the works created are usually presented to the public at the end of the event.
Master of the Korça landscape
Vangjush Mio (1891–1957) is considered one of the founders of modern Albanian painting and a master of landscape, closely tied to Korça and its light. The house where he lived and worked in the city has been turned into a museum and preserves part of his work and objects from his life. The Guri Madhi gallery, a partner of the colony, is also named after a Korça painter.
The “Days of Mio” have become a lasting tradition in Korça's cultural calendar, keeping the painter's legacy alive and connecting it with younger generations of artists, in a city that is also hosting a film festival this week.
