In brief
- Seven officers have been suspended by the State Police itself and are under investigation by the AMP.
- At least 55 complaints from citizens have been filed so far.
- Caka warned young people they could face criminal liability if drawn into violence.
Deputy Interior Minister Silva Caka acknowledged on Friday that during clashes with protesters in Tirana there were cases in which police officers exceeded their authority. She spoke in Korça, on the sidelines of a meeting on fighting child trafficking.
“There are currently 7 officers suspended by the State Police itself,” Caka said. She said all of them are under investigation by the Police Oversight Agency (AMP), while four other officers are being investigated mainly by the AMP itself.
55 complaints
Caka said at least 55 complaints have been filed so far by various citizens who allege officers went beyond their duties. She said all complaints will be reviewed and citizens will receive an answer.
According to the deputy minister, the police in some cases did not react, in others intervened proportionately and in some cases exceeded their authority. She also warned that young people and children taking part in the protests risk being drawn into situations incited by others and facing criminal liability.
An arrest after the rally
Also on Friday, the Tirana Local Police Directorate announced the arrest of a protester suspected of resisting police and throwing hard objects at officers and institutions during the previous day's rally, when a police officer was injured. Another person was declared wanted, suspected of hitting an officer with hard objects during the rally two days earlier.
