In brief
- Besmir Beja remains in his post as director general of customs, even though his departure has been announced.
- He inspected the renovated premises of the Durrës Customs Branch and met with staff.
- The meeting focused on meeting the revenue plan.
Director General of Customs Besmir Beja carried on with official duties Saturday with a visit to the Durrës Customs Branch. According to Top Channel, Beja is among the officials who continue to carry out their duties even though their departure from leadership posts has been announced. The report does not give the reasons for the departure.
Renovated premises
During the visit, Beja inspected the branch’s premises, which have been renovated, and held a meeting with administrative staff. The Durrës branch is one of the most important points in Albania’s customs system because of the volume of goods that passes through the port.
According to a notice posted on the official page of the General Directorate of Customs, the head of the institution asked employees for “maximum commitment” to improve performance and raise the quality of service for both citizens and businesses.
The revenue plan
Part of the meeting was devoted to carrying out the revenue plan. Customs is one of the main sources of receipts for the state budget, so revenue collection at year’s end is closely watched by the administration.
The visit to Durrës comes as the institution goes through a period of leadership transition, with officials staying on until they are replaced. The General Directorate of Customs has not said when a new head is expected to be appointed. Beja’s visit shows that, for now, the institution’s leadership is sticking to the same priorities: performance, service and revenue collection.
