In brief
- A minor attacked a police officer with two knives near the Israeli Embassy in Belgrade and was shot dead.
- Interior Minister Ivica Dacic said the attacker was an Islamic State supporter and was being monitored by the security services.
- Serbia raised its terror alert to the highest level.
Serbian police early Wednesday killed a minor who attacked with knives near the Israeli Embassy in Belgrade, in what authorities are treating as a suspected terrorist attack. The attacker's identity has not been made public, nor have the attacker's exact age and other background details, beyond the fact that the attacker was a minor.
Dacic: the attacker was being monitored
According to Interior Minister Ivica Dacic, the minor “attacked a member of the police with two knives.” The officer was lightly wounded and shot the attacker dead, acting, according to Dacic, in self-defense. The minister said the security services had been monitoring the suspect, whom he described as a supporter of the Islamic State group, and that the suspect had displayed the group's flag on Instagram.
After the attack, Serbia raised its terror alert to the highest level and stepped up security at key sites across the country.
The embassy was closed
Israel's Foreign Ministry said no embassy personnel were injured and that the mission was closed at the time of the attack. According to the ministry, the attacker “was neutralized by local police.”
It is not the first time the embassy has been targeted: a similar attack took place outside it in June 2024. The latest incident came just days after Serbia's early parliamentary election and immediately after Israel's parliamentary election. Investigations into the circumstances of the attack and the minor's possible connections are continuing.
