In brief
- A working group at the Prime Minister's Office is preparing the package against violence at protests.
- Those identified for acts of violence would be blacklisted in the TIMS system.
- People on the list would not be allowed to enter EU countries.
The government is preparing a package of measures targeting people involved in acts of violence during recent days of protests in Tirana. According to internal sources cited by Top Channel, a working group at the Prime Minister's Office is drafting the document that Prime Minister Edi Rama announced earlier in the week.
The core of the proposal is the creation of a blacklist. People identified as perpetrators of violence would be entered into the TIMS system, which is used to monitor movement across the border, and would not be allowed to enter European Union countries.
The measure first provides for identifying those involved in incidents and then entering them into the system. The report does not yet give details on the legal basis, the implementation timeline or how the mechanism would be coordinated with EU countries.
According to the same source, the government is also considering other measures, but they have not been made public. As of publication, there had been no official confirmation from the Prime Minister's Office on the content of the package.
The report comes as the protests in the capital have entered their eighth day, while opposition representatives have described the announced measures as a threat to citizens.
