Two people were arrested in Tirana after the Oct. 27 protest in front of the Ministry of Education building, Tirana police said, according to ATSH (the Albanian Telegraphic Agency). The arrests were made in the act by specialists of the Crime Investigation Section at Police Station No. 3.
What is alleged
Those arrested are V.C., 49, and B.P., 27. According to police, during the rally they resisted officers, threw hard objects at the Ministry of Education and set a trash bin on fire, damaging public property. Their actions, police say, also blocked traffic on Durrës Street, one of the capital's main thoroughfares.
For the 27-year-old the investigation goes beyond the protest. Police suspect that on Oct. 23, on “Abdi Toptani” street, he stole the motorbike case of a resident with the initials Xh.C., worth about 1,000 euros.
The charges
The case files were sent to prosecutors for “destruction of property by fire,” “resisting a public order police officer,” “organizing and participating in unlawful gatherings,” “disturbing public peace,” “obstructing the movement of vehicles” and “theft.” The charges are under investigation and the suspects are presumed innocent.
The Ministry of Education on Durrës Street has become the starting point of marches by students, who have been protesting against the government for more than two weeks. The building's windows are still protected by barricades after incidents in previous days. The arrests were announced on the same day the Council of Ministers approved new fines for taking part in banned gatherings and for blocking roads.
