A 39-year-old Italian citizen has suffered serious injuries after falling accidentally while working at a factory in Tepelena. The incident was made public on Tuesday evening.
The worker, identified by the initials R. Sh., was immediately taken for medical care and later transferred to the University Trauma Hospital in Tirana, where he is receiving specialized treatment. Sources have not given details on his current condition.
Circumstances still unclear
The name of the factory where the 39-year-old worked has not been made public, nor the exact time and cause of the fall. It is not yet known whether occupational safety and health measures were in place at the workplace.
In such cases, police and the State Labor and Social Services Inspectorate usually check conditions at the workplace and whether the employee was equipped with the necessary protective gear. So far there has been no official announcement of criminal proceedings or measures against the employer.
Workplace accidents, a recurring problem
Workplace accidents, especially falls from height at construction sites and factories, remain among the main causes of serious workplace injuries in Albania. Unions and occupational safety experts have long called for more frequent inspections and tougher penalties for employers who do not comply with standards.
The Tepelena case comes on a day when the Trauma Hospital in Tirana also received several people injured in the protests in the capital. The hospital is the country's main center for treating multiple trauma and receives patients with serious injuries from all counties, including Gjirokastra, to which Tepelena belongs.
The presence of foreign workers in Albanian factories, especially Italians, is common in sectors such as processing and manufacturing, where companies with Italian capital have invested for years in various cities across the country.
