In brief
- Rama said the government will formally address the fiscal package the next day, when it approves the 2027 budget.
- According to him, the budget will be the first in the country's history to exceed 10 billion euros.
- The prime minister called the public debate a “salad of hatred and ignorance” built on half-finished documents.
Prime Minister Edi Rama responded on Tuesday on the social network X to the public debate over the new 2027 fiscal package, announcing that the government will formally address the matter the next day, when it approves the draft budget.
“A salad of hatred and ignorance”
Rama criticized commentators who, in his view, are discussing the new measures on the basis of incomplete working documents. He described the discussion as a “salad of hatred and ignorance” built on half-finished documents, ironically telling critics that they keep talking about the new fiscal measures.
According to the prime minister, next year's budget will be the first in Albania's history to exceed 10 billion euros. He presented the fiscal package as one of the most ambitious measures for redistributing economic growth.
Debate ahead of approval
The package has drawn strong reactions from the opposition and the business community even before its official publication. PD leader Sali Berisha said on Tuesday as well that his party will cancel the package if it comes to power, claiming it raises taxes on dividends and profits and lowers the VAT threshold.
The approval of the draft budget comes at a time of high political tension, as the student protests in Tirana have entered their third week. In the morning, Rama had said the budget contains extra measures for families, public services and students. The opposition, for its part, has called a national protest for Saturday and said it will announce its position on the budget later.
