The Prosecutor's Office at the Tirana Court of First Instance, in cooperation with the Police Oversight Agency, has registered three complaints over the conduct of State Police officers during the protests of recent days.
The first case concerns 19-year-old Ledion Balla, who suffered a leg fracture on Oct. 13 near Parliament. In published footage he is seen being carried by four police officers. The young man has said he was not part of the protest but was simply passing through the area.
The second case concerns 21-year-old Muhamed Skana, who on Oct. 16, near the Ministry of Education, was slammed to the asphalt by a police officer during an intervention. He suffered injuries to his head and spine and was taken to the Trauma Hospital.
The third proceeding has been opened over other actions by officers during the protests, with no further details given.
After the footage of Ledion Balla was published, four police officers and the chief of public order at Police Station No. 1 were suspended from duty. The Prosecutor's Office said it continues to monitor the situation in order to document any possible violations of the law.
