The parliamentary group of the Democratic Party (PD) has asked the speaker of Parliament, Niko Peleshi, to convene an extraordinary plenary session, either Tuesday or Wednesday. The request is based on Article 31 of Parliament's Rules of Procedure.
The Democrats propose an agenda with just one item, a debate on the protest by students and young people. It includes the protesters' demand for Prime Minister Edi Rama to step down, as well as allegations of police violence against minors, students and young people.
The opposition's allegations
In the letter, PD says the protest has gone on for eight days and that its lawmakers have witnessed serious acts of violence, with injured people suffering fractures and head wounds. The opposition also alleges that some officers were not wearing identification numbers.
The Democrats accuse Parliament's leadership of canceling a scheduled plenary session without notice or explanation. As of publication, there had been no reaction to the request from the speaker of Parliament or from the majority.
