In brief
- The Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs denied that a plane from Israel would bring equipment for the police.
- Spokesman Alteo Hysi called the report untrue and reprehensible.
- He warned that the possible involvement of foreign actors in disinformation poses a threat to national security.
The Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs on Monday denied information that a plane from Israel would transport riot-control equipment for the State Police.
The claim had spread in the media a day earlier, at the height of the violent anti-government protests in Tirana.
The ministry's spokesman, Alteo Hysi, described the report as a fabrication and said such false information is irresponsible and reprehensible.
Hysi warned that false news spread deliberately to stir up insecurity or tension can become a tool of manipulation, while the possible involvement of foreign actors in such cases constitutes, in his view, a threat to national security.
He stressed that verifying facts before a story is believed or shared is a civic responsibility, not just one for the media.
