Montenegrin President Jakov Milatović met Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar in Budapest on Saturday to secure Hungary’s backing in the final phase of Montenegro’s European Union accession talks. The meeting was reported by Montenegro’s public broadcaster RTCG.
Target: first half of 2027
Milatović asked Hungary to keep actively advocating Montenegro’s membership and to support closing the negotiations and signing the Accession Treaty during the first half of 2027. “Montenegro is entering the decisive phase of European integration, and in the coming period it is essential to maintain the momentum of reforms, especially in the rule of law, strengthening institutions and fulfilling the remaining obligations,” he said.
Magyar voiced strong support for Podgorica’s European path. “The results Montenegro has achieved are an important indicator of progress in the accession process. Hungary will continue to support an EU enlargement policy based on concrete results by candidate countries,” he said.
The 2028 goal
The Hungarian prime minister reiterated that his country will be a reliable partner for Montenegro in the final stage of the talks and that it supports the goal of Montenegro becoming an EU member by 2028. The two sides said Montenegro’s integration also matters for the other candidate countries and for the stability of the Western Balkans.
Milatović invited Magyar to visit Montenegro in the coming period.
