Liverpool beat Brighton 2-0 at Anfield in the eighth round of the Premier League, and Andoni Iraola celebrated his first league win at the Reds' stadium. The victory ended a run of five home games without a win and stopped Brighton, who had come in on an eight-game unbeaten streak.
Both goals came within four minutes. In the 17th minute Florian Wirtz's powerful shot was deflected into his own net by Pascal Gross, and in the 21st minute Bradley Barcola found Alexander Isak with a cross for his sixth goal of the season.
Brighton dominate, Liverpool strike
Fabian Hürzeler's side had the ball for most of the match, with 64% possession, but managed only one shot on target. Brighton's best chance came in the 14th minute, when Yasin Ayari blazed over from close range. Hürzeler called the game “a missed opportunity,” blaming two easy mistakes that led to the goals. According to ESPN, Liverpool had four shots on target to Brighton's one, while the visitors' goalkeeper made three saves.
“We needed this win at home to celebrate with the supporters,” said Iraola, for whom it was the team's fourth straight win.
Table and upcoming games
With the result Liverpool move up to fourth place, six points behind Manchester City and Arsenal. On Wednesday the Reds host Chelsea in the League Cup, and next Sunday they host Arsenal in the Premier League.
