In brief
- Kurti urged Albanians in Presheva, Bujanoc and Medvegja to vote on Oct. 25 for list No. 17.
- He recalled the Sept. 29 meeting in Pristina where the valley’s parties agreed to run together.
- In 2020 a joint Albanian list won three seats in Serbia’s 250-seat Parliament; later, running separately, they won only one.
Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti on Saturday urged Albanians in the Presheva Valley to turn out in large numbers Sunday in Serbia’s snap parliamentary elections and back the “Albanian Coalition,” which is running as No. 17.
In his statement, Kurti recalled that on Sept. 29 he hosted the leaders of the valley’s Albanian political parties in his office, a meeting that ended with an agreement on a joint list.
“A ballot weighs little in the hand”
“The Albanians of Presheva, Bujanoc and Medvegja have the right to build their lives in their homeland, with equal opportunities. Discrimination, exclusion and oppression demand a firm democratic response. With solidarity. With perseverance. With participation,” Kurti wrote.
He also addressed those who live in Kosovo but are registered to vote in the valley’s three municipalities: “All of you who are in Kosovo and have the right to vote in Presheva, Bujanoc and Medvegja should be in your hometowns tomorrow to vote.” He closed with: “A ballot weighs little in the hand, but the decision weighs on the future.”
The lesson of 2020
According to KosovaPress, the valley’s Albanian parties ran on a single list for the first time in 2020 and won three seats in Serbia’s 250-seat Parliament. In later elections, running separately, they won only one seat. That is why this year’s alliance is seen in the valley as a chance to restore broader representation in Belgrade.
