In brief
- Konjufca said at the UN that the verdict against former KLA leaders contains errors of fact and substance and that they are expected to be corrected on appeal.
- Daut Haradinaj called the stance humiliating for Kosovo and asked the PDK to declare its position.
- Ariana Musliu-Shoshi wrote that historical truth “is not defended with half a voice” and that the minister did not mention the role of Thaçi, Veseli, Krasniqi and Selimi.
The speech by Kosovo's First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Glauk Konjufca at the UN Security Council session has drawn sharp reactions from the opposition, particularly over how he addressed the Specialist Chambers' verdict against former KLA leaders.
In New York, Konjufca said the verdict contains errors of fact and substance and that Kosovo expects them to be corrected in the appeals process, stressing that justice must be impartial and based on evidence.
Haradinaj: A humiliated Kosovo
Former AAK lawmaker Daut Haradinaj reacted in strong terms. He said he had never expected Kosovo to present itself this way before the international community and that the world is viewing Kosovo strangely. “I never expected a Kosovo humiliated to this point,” he wrote, addressing the minister with the words “Shame, Glauk!” Haradinaj vowed to keep seeking the truth about the war and asked the PDK to state its position.
Musliu-Shoshi: You don't represent a party
PDK lawmaker Ariana Musliu-Shoshi called the speech feeble. In a Facebook post she criticized the minister for describing the ruling only as wrong in substance and facts, without mentioning the role of Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Jakup Krasniqi and Rexhep Selimi in the liberation, independence and state-building. “Injustice is not opposed with diplomacy for the sake of formality. Historical truth is not defended with half a voice,” she wrote, adding: “Minister, there you do not represent a party or a government.” She noted that Konjufca has been tasked with leading the state strategy on The Hague.
The debate comes as President Justina Shiroka-Pula has on her desk Parliament's amendments to the law on the Specialist Chambers, which limit the court's jurisdiction and reduce the maximum sentence to 15 years. Experts such as Ehat Miftaraj of the Kosovo Law Institute have advised the president to return the law to Parliament, while the EU has said it is deeply concerned about the changes.
