In brief
- Hoxha met the ambassadors of EU member states in Tirana on the situation following the protests.
- Institutional stability, the rule of law and the proportionality of the authorities’ actions were discussed.
- The minister said EU membership remains a strategic national objective.
Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Ferit Hoxha on Monday gathered the ambassadors of European Union member states in Tirana to brief them on the latest developments in the country, after two weeks of student protests and clashes with the police.
According to the ministry’s statement, Hoxha stressed that the government remains committed to democratic freedoms, including the fundamental right to peaceful assembly. He added that violence, vandalism and attacks on public or private property cannot be considered legitimate means of political expression, a principle that he said applies in Albania just as anywhere else in Europe.
Legality and proportionality
The meeting also discussed the importance of preserving institutional stability, respecting the rule of law and ensuring that all actions by public authorities are lawful and proportionate. The point comes as prosecutors have opened investigations into suspected disproportionate use of force by the police during the protests.
Hoxha reaffirmed that the government is ready for dialogue “at any time, anywhere and with anyone” not involved in acts of violence, presenting dialogue as the best way to overcome differences and address concerns.
The European path
On the integration process, the minister said EU membership remains a strategic national objective. “Difficult moments should strengthen our resolve and not divert us from the reforms, democratic standards and responsibilities that stem from our ambition to join the European Union,” Hoxha said, praising European partners’ continued engagement with Albania.
