In brief
- The disciplinary council found Ronaldo guilty of an intentional violation of Article 160(1).
- The 30-day suspension is the minimum penalty for walking out on the national team.
- According to Goal, the ban is counted from the day of the Denmark match, so he will not miss any games.
The disciplinary council of the Portuguese Football Federation suspended Cristiano Ronaldo for 30 days and fined him 255 euros after he left the national team camp in Copenhagen without permission before the Nations League match against Denmark in early October.
The disciplinary body upheld the charge “in full” and found that the 41-year-old had intentionally violated Article 160(1) of the disciplinary regulations. The regulations provide for a suspension of one to six months for this offense, so Ronaldo received the minimum penalty.
The clash with Jorge Jesus
Ronaldo left after remaining on the bench without playing in the 2-1 win over Norway and accused coach Jorge Jesus of twice breaking his word about his role in the team. Jesus denied having made any agreement with the striker but left the door open for his return.
The council took into account Ronaldo's apology for not greeting the fans after the Norway match and for abandoning his teammates, as well as his contribution to football. According to Goal, the suspension is counted from the day of the Denmark match, so he will have served it within October and remains available for the November matches.
Federation President Pedro Proença said everyone at the federation wants to see Ronaldo back with the national team once the matter is closed. The player himself has said he remains available to be called up after serving the ban.
