In brief
- Durrës Customs seized 16,080 euros that the driver of a truck had not declared.
- The inspection was carried out together with the Border Police during procedures for the Durrës–Bari ferry.
- The case was referred to the responsible authorities to pursue legal proceedings.
Customs officers in Durrës have seized 16,080 euros in undeclared cash, found in a truck preparing to travel on the Durrës–Bari ferry line. The announcement was made by the General Directorate of Customs, quoted by ATSH (the Albanian Telegraphic Agency).
The money, in various denominations, was discovered during a physical inspection of the vehicle by staff of the Durrës Customs Branch, in cooperation with the Border Police. The inspection was carried out as part of stepped-up checks at the second line during ferry procedures.
Amount above the declaration threshold
Under current legislation, cash amounts above the legal threshold entering or leaving Albania must be declared at customs. Failure to declare them is a violation and can lead to seizure of the amount and to prosecution.
Customs has not made public the name, nationality or other details of the truck driver. According to the announcement, the responsible authorities have been notified and legal procedures are being followed in cooperation with the competent bodies.
Stepped-up checks at the port
Customs stresses that it will continue to step up checks at border crossing points to prevent and detect customs violations. The port of Durrës is Albania's main maritime link with Italy, with daily ferry lines to Bari and Ancona.
Checks for undeclared cash are part of measures against money laundering and smuggling, an area in which Albania is monitored by international partners. Coincidentally, Parliament is expected to consider a new draft law on Thursday on preventing money laundering and terrorist financing.
Such seizures at the port of Durrës are reported periodically by Customs, mainly involving truck drivers and passengers traveling to Italy. The seized amounts remain at the disposal of law enforcement until checks on their origin are completed.
