In brief

  • Socialist Party (PS) MP Pirro Vengu commented on the bonus for police officers deployed at the protests.
  • He called for teachers, soldiers, doctors, nurses and firefighters to be ranked at the top of the pay scale.
  • According to him, democratic dialogue can begin once order is restored on the streets and in values.

Socialist MP Pirro Vengu reacted on Monday to the government's decision to reward State Police officers who have been on the front line during the student protests.

Vengu linked the issue of pay raises to the need to put the focus on the professions that ensure the functioning of the state and shape the future of society. “Teachers, soldiers and police officers, doctors and nurses, and firefighters should be at the top of the pay pyramid,” he wrote.

According to the MP, these categories deserve the highest salaries in the public administration because of the responsibility they bear and the service they provide to citizens.

He called for the restoration of order both on the streets and in the hierarchy of values and responsibilities, adding that only after this can a genuine democratic dialogue begin.

His reaction came after Prime Minister Rama announced a bonus of 2,500 euros for every police officer involved in managing the protests and a pay raise from Jan. 1.
