In brief
- Sali Berisha rejected the government's invitation to talks.
- He called Rama's resignation the only political solution.
- Berisha called for corridors for the injured under the mediation of the International Red Cross.
The chairman of the Democratic Party (PD), Sali Berisha, on Monday rejected Prime Minister Edi Rama's invitation to dialogue, a few hours after the head of government had repeated his readiness for talks without conditions.
In a statement to the media, Berisha said the revolt led by young people and students will not end and that the only political way out is Rama's departure from office. “Resign so that there can be a political solution,” he said.
The Democratic leader accused the prime minister of vote manipulation and propaganda, also using personal insults against him.
Call for humanitarian intervention
Berisha called for the urgent mediation of the International Committee of the Red Cross to open corridors for the injured, as well as solidarity from citizens and humanitarian intervention by international institutions.
The PD parliamentary group has in recent days demanded the government's resignation, the formation of a caretaker government and early elections.
