In brief

  • Switzerland expressed concern about the escalation of violence during the protests.
  • The embassy asked all sides for restraint and constructive dialogue.
  • Security forces were urged to act in line with international human rights standards.

The Swiss Embassy in Tirana reacted on Monday evening to the protests that have been taking place for seven days in the capital, joining international voices calling for a reduction in tensions.

In its statement, the diplomatic mission expressed concern about the latest outbreak of violence and the destruction of public and private property during the demonstrations in Albania. “Switzerland is concerned about the latest outbreak of violence,” the statement says.

The embassy called on all sides to show restraint and to give priority to constructive dialogue.

Stressing that the right to peaceful assembly is essential to a democratic society, Switzerland asked the authorities to fully guarantee this right, together with media freedom.

The statement also called on the security forces to ensure their actions are in line with international human rights standards.
