In brief
- A group of lawyers filed a criminal complaint with SPAK over alleged coordinated police violence against protesters.
- The representatives said they have documented 180 cases of violence against citizens, students and high school students.
- They criticized Rama’s anti-violence package as an attempt to impose silence.
A group of intellectuals, academics and civil society representatives said on Monday that it has filed a criminal complaint with SPAK, the Special Anti-Corruption Structure, over alleged violent actions by the State Police against students and protesters.
They made the statement outside the Education Ministry, in support of the students. Olsi Nika, one of the signatories, said the complaint was filed by a group of lawyers last Friday and seeks a full investigation of all individuals who, in their view, used coordinated violence against protesters. “It is very clear that violence is being used to impose silence,” he said.
180 documented cases
According to ATSH (the Albanian Telegraphic Agency), one of the representatives said the group has documented 180 cases of police violence against citizens, students and high school students and expressed hope that the investigation will be quick and thorough. Activist Rezarta Çaushaj said she expects security measures for police officers, not for students, asserting that violent police behavior at the protests is “not suspicion, but fact.”
Criticism of the package
The group also criticized the anti-violence package presented by Prime Minister Rama, which Nika called a continuation of efforts to encourage silence, with no connection to democratic rules. He acknowledged it is still early for a response from prosecutors but urged them to speed up the investigation. The complaint comes as the Tirana Prosecutor’s Office has opened a separate investigation into suspected disproportionate use of force by the police.
